Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics says the country lost almost $1.3 billion dollars in economic activity during a recent nationwide strike.
The bureau gave the statistics Wednesday, saying the wholesale and retail sector of Africa’s most popular nation suffered the worst during the six-day strike.
Nigerian unions called off the paralyzing strike Monday, after President Goodluck Jonathan sent soldiers into the streets of major cities in the oil-rich country. The government had also agreed to lower the new price on fuel to about N97.00 approximately $2.27 a gallon (60 cents a litre).
Nigerian Labour unions called the strike after fuel prices more than doubled to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per litre) after the government removed a subsidy that kept the price of gas low on Jan. 1.
