Wood Group’s subsidiary Wood Group Kenny (WGK) Australia announced Thursday that it has been awarded a contract to provide engineering and project management services to Sunbird Energy Ltd for the Ibhubesi gas project, off the west coast of South Africa.

The initial phase of WGK’s work involves the concept and definition phases, with the objective of moving the project into front end engineering design (FEED) in 1Q 2014. The project is likely to include a subsea gathering system, an offshore processing facility, a subsea pipeline, approximately 248.5 miles (400 kilometres) in length, and an onshore plant.

Sunbird Energy executed an agreement to acquire a 76 percent stake in the Ibhubesi gas field in 2012. The Ibhubesi gas project has multiple development opportunities to supply the high value South African energy market. Sunbird’s joint venture partner in the project is PetroSA (24 percent), the national oil company of South Africa.

Working closely with the Sunbird Energy team from the Perth office, WGK will provide an integrated approach to engineering and project management delivery through their dedicated project management (PPM) discipline.

Alan Fotheringham, Wood Group Kenny’s PPM group managing director said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract to support Sunbird Energy. Wood Group Kenny is the market leader in pipelines, subsea equipment, riser and mooring design and has more than thirty years’ experience in delivering projects of this nature. We are looking forward to working closely with the Sunbird Energy teams to achieve safe, sustainable solutions to develop the Ibhubesi gas field.”

WGK has previously undertaken concept evaluation studies related to the project from its Houston offices.
