Visualization Sciences Group (VSG) has signed a global partnership agreement with Schlumberger that will expand the integration of VSG’s Open Inventor technology across the whole range of Schlumberger software products. This global technological collaboration will make available ultimate 3D high performance and graphics capabilities to all Schlumberger software products, providing oil and gas companies with first-class 3D software solutions to fully realize the potential of the digital oil field.

Schlumberger provides oil and gas software and services to solve today’s tough reservoir challenges by enabling the creativity of geoscientists and engineers through innovative workflows and comprehensive global services. The software products include Petrel Seismic to Simulation Software, ECLIPSE Reservoir Engineering Software, GeoFrame Reservoir Characterization Software, and the Ocean software development framework, which is the most productive software development environment available in the oil and gas industry.

VSG develops Open Inventor, a 3D graphics toolkit providing powerful 3D visualization and data management components with an object-oriented API (Programming Interface) for C++, .NET and Java. The Open Inventor extensible architecture and large set of advanced components provide developers with a high-level platform for rapid prototyping and development of 3D graphics applications. Open Inventor offers unique added-value extensions, such as VolumeViz LDM for state-of-the-art volume rendering and out-of-core volume data management, and MeshViz XLM, which delivers advanced support for extremely large geometries, allowing management and interactive rendering of several-hundred-million cell grids, as well as a powerful computing API for on-the-fly computation using GPUs (OpenCL, Nvidia® CUDA™, …).

Open Inventor has been used for more than ten years in various Schlumberger software products, and this new partnership agreement provides the potential to expand the use of Open Inventor to any Schlumberger software product or application. It also consolidates the partnership between both companies so that they can collaborate more closely to ensure that all Schlumberger products benefit in the most optimal way from VSG’s latest 3D technologies.

Geoscientists and engineers who use Schlumberger software products will benefit immensely from this high-level technological partnership, through improved performance, reliability and graphics quality of their E&P applications.

Commenting on the agreement, James P. Brady, Schlumberger Information Solutions’ Vice President of Technology says, “Schlumberger is pleased to expand its relationship with VSG. The Open Inventor framework is established in our flagship products, and expanding the use the technology will bring value to our customers”

“We are pleased to become a key supplier for all Schlumberger software products” said Jean Bernard Cazeaux, CEO of Visualization Sciences Group. “As a global 3D technology partner, VSG will leverage its 20-years expertise in advanced visualization and data management to Schlumberger, associating the leading 3D visualization technology to the leading Oil & Gas software applications, for unrivalled solutions in this challenging market.”
