Petrobras has confirmed that it has struck high quality crude reserves at its Nordest de Tupi well offshore Brazil.

The well was drilled to the northeast of the Lula field in water 2131m deep, approximately 255 km offshore Rio de Janiero.

The company released a statement saying, “So far, a column of oil more than 290 m thick has been identified in carbonate pre-salt reservoirs.” According to tests performed on the well, the oil is rated at 26 degrees.

Once drilling is completed, Petrobras will begin well formation tests to determine long term production prospects.

The company has begun to increase the rate at which it develops the vast pre-salt fields offshore Brazil with investment of US$ 225 billion planned up until at least 2014. Recently discovered reserves in the region are expected to contain up to of 100 million bbls.
