Morocco-focused Longreach Oil & Gas has secured a rig from Saipem to drill a pair of onshore exploration wells in October.

The Toronto-listed explorer said it had signed a contract with the Italian services giant for the Saipem Drillmec Mas 7000 rig to drill the first two wells on its Sidi Moktar exploration licence area and options for two more wells.

The first target will be the Koba prospect believed prospective in Lower Jurassic and Triassic sandstones.

Longreach chief executive Andrew Benitz said the Koba probe was backed by “extensive geophysical, geological and petrophysical studies”, with the explorer having gathered and processed 520 kilometres of 2D seismic on the acreage earlier this year.

The rig is expected onsite in mid-October after mobilisation from Saipem’s Hassi Messaoud base in Algeria, with the first well to spud shortly afterwards.

Longreach has a 50% operatorship interest in the three-block Sidi Moktar licence area in central Morocco’s Essaouira Basin since a 2011 farm-in with domestic private Maghreb Petroleum Exploration.

  1. Longarm

Morocco-focused but Canada, US or European based. Longreach is Toronto-listed. As the name implies – they are all over North Africa for the oil. Longreach from Canada and rig from Sapiem Italy. Morocco’s contribution – wait and collect stipends.
