French state-controlled power engineering firm Areva SA Wednesday said it will team with Spain’s Iberdrola Renovables SA to bid in a French government tender for wind farms offshore western France.

Areva has already teamed with power group GDF Suez SA for other offshore wind farm tender offers in northern France.

The French government announced a plan to develop 6,000 megawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2020, with a first phase representing 3,000 MW to be launched by July.

Under the terms of the deal between Areva and Iberdrola Renovables, Areva will be sole supplier of the turbines that will equip the offshore farms, which will in turn be developed by the Spanish company.

Iberdrola Renovables is the largest wind energy company in the world and has a pipeline of around 10,000 MW in offshore wind projects across Europe, primarily in the U.K.
