British oil major BP is to take on 250 graduates in the UK in 2012, a 50% increase on previous years.

The first 100 graduates taken on will be offered secondments on a first-come, first-served basis to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games organising committee LOCOG. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work at the main operations centre, in transport or in city operations, will be trained by BP before they start, and receive further on-the-job training from LOCOG. The secondments will begin in June 2012, and run up to September, when the graduates will begin their full-time BP careers. During the secondment, the graduates will receive an internship salary, accommodation and transport costs.

“Being one of the leading UK graduate employers, and an Official Partner of the London 2012 Games, we wanted a special welcome for the graduates joining BP this year, so what better way than starting their careers with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This will be a memorable experience – a fantastic opportunity for students in a truly unique setting,” says Emma Judge, BP’s head of UK graduate recruitment.

The UK’s universities and science minister David Willetts said that the news was “excellent” and “a reassuring sign that the recruitment market is improving thanks to companies such as BP.”
